  3. This package contains a PostScript Type 1 font -- Vietfont(tm) -- for 
  4. Vietnamese, together with other software that allows the use of 
  5. Vietnamese text with any application on a Macintosh.

  7. This is freeware, and the first such free Vietnamese font for the 
  8. Macintosh and/or PostScript. Free redistribution is encouraged. Comments 
  9. are welcome.

  11. Installation
  12. ------------

  14. The following instructions pertain to a Macintosh running System 7; 
  15. installation for pre-System 7 Mac's is more intricate. 
  16.  
  17. Besides this READ ME file, this package contains these files, to be used 
  18. as follows:
  19.  
  20. 1/ Vietfont.bmap -- the VietFont bitmap file: open this file and copy 
  21. the content into the System _file_. This is required by the Macintosh 
  22. font manager as well as the Adobe Type Manager (ATM), if you also use 
  23. the latter.

  25. 2/ Vietf -- the downloadable Vietfont font file: copy this file into the 
  26. System _folder_. During printing, this file is downloaded into a 
  27. PostScript printer; if you do not have a PostScript printer, you will 
  28. need ATM, which will use this file to prepare an output file for the 
  29. printer.

  31. 3/ uVNs(tm) -- the Vietnamese-specific keyboard resource (KCHR): copy 
  32. this file directly into the System _file_. This KCHR is a convenient 
  33. interface for Vietnamese text entry. The name "uVNs" combines "US" and 
  34. "VN" because the key sequences to enter Vietnamese is grafted on top of 
  35. the "US" keyboard, which the default KCHR in the United States.

  37. 4/ Keyboard Switcher -- a control panel device (cdev) that permits 
  38. keyboard switching: copy this file directly into the Control Panels 
  39. folder in the System folder. After restarting your Mac, you can use 
  40. Keyboard Switcher to switch to "uVNs" and/or set it as the startup 
  41. default for your Mac. Keyboard Switcher (version 1.9.2) was written by 
  42. James W Walker, and has been included here for your convenience; please 
  43. note that many other KCHRs exist for other languages, and are freely 
  44. available from various archives.

  46. Typing Vietnamese with the "uVNs" keyboard
  47. ------------------------------------------

  49. The "uVNs" KCHR modifies all the  <option>  key combinations on the 
  50. Apple (US) Keyboard for the entry of Vietnamese-specific characters; 
  51. some of these become "dead keys" in order to input tone marks, much like 
  52. the familiar Olympia typewriter keyboard.

  54. NOTE: You _must_ select Vietfont (or any other font using the same 
  55.       encoding) as your font for the text to appear correctly.

  82. first, then the base character. Below are the tone marks and the 
  83. corresponding "dead keys":
